Joseph Suffolk (later a resident of Tomerong) is believed to be the son of John Suffolk, convict, who was transported via the Lord Sidmouth(1) in 1819. This notice in the NSW Government Gazette 9 August 1853 seems to support this:
In the 1850s Joseph Suffolk was living with his family near Kiama.
William Walker (1828-1908) |
The William Walker who published the notice would be Joseph Suffolk's nephew, the son of his wife's sister Elizabeth Ferguson and George Walker, a schoolteacher. Hopefully he gave his uncle family rates.
William Walker was a solicitor at Windsor from 1852, and also served on his local council as alderman and mayor, and as a member of parliament.
John Suffolk actually died during 1852, so there is a large gap between his death and the matter being taken to court. I have ordered the probate packet from the NSW State Archives & Records office to see if there is further information about this.
